Swim Teams Open Season

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind - The Purdue swim teams opened their 2000-01 seasons with an Intersquad meet today. Both the men's and women's teams were split to combine for the Gold Squad versus the Black Squad. After coming down to the final event, the Black Squad came out on top for the annual event.

The event that kicked off the meet was the women's 400-yard medley relay. Finishing first for the Black Squad were Lisa Dolansky, Lindsay Lange, Patricia Finnerty and Ginger Lakos with a time of 3:54.06. Finishing second was the Gold Squad team of Jennifer Alden, Lindsay Kirchoff, Autumn Sample and Missy Bromley with a time of 3:58.66.

The men's 400-yard medley relay followed. Taking first was the Gold Squad team of John Wakefield, Tamas Bessenyei, Tad Sayce and Dave Weis, finishing with a time of 3:28.40. Finishing second was the Black Squad team of Nick Cenci, Mike Miller, Donovan Crowley and Will Seelbach with a time of 3:35.08.

In the women's 1000-yard freestyle, Gold Squad member Shannon Funk finished first with a time of 10:17:41. Black Squad member Kelly Mackus finished second at 10:28.29.

The Black Squad took first place in the men's 1000-yard freestyle with Matt Martin finishing at 9:35.64. Tom Drejer finished second for the Gold Squad at 9:43.02.

Laura Dill finished first for the Gold Squad in the women's 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.94. Her Gold Squad teammate Kimberly Paradeise finished second at 1:59.06.

The Gold Squad also took first place in the men's 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.79 by Jeremy Wright. Black Squad member Ehud Dekter finished a close second with a time of 1:43.33.

Freestyle sprinters Missy Bromley and Lange finished first and second in the women's 50-yard freestyle with times of 24.23 and 25.17, respectively. Bromley swam for the Gold Squad.

In the men's 50-yard freestyle, Weis finished first at 21.33 and Jon Duncan of the Black Squad finished second with a time of 21.53.

For the women's 200-yard individual medley, Black Squad member Jenni Bean finished first with a time of 2:11.52 while Mackus finished a close second at 2:11.78.

On the men's side, Matt Martin finished first with a time of 1:53.66. Bessenyei finished second with a time of 1:53.86.

In the women's one-meter diving competition, Kara Hajeck of the Black Squad took first place with a score of 122.35. Molly MacFarlane of the Gold Squad came in second with a score of 113.20.

Black Squad member Kevin Young won the men's one-meter diving competition. He finished with a score of 129.25. Gold Squad member John Haglund took second with a score of 113. 85.

Karin Stender of the Gold Squad took first place in the women's 200-yard butterfly competition at 2:07.10. Finnerty placed second with a time of 2:07.46.

Sayce and Dekter finished first and second in the men's 200-yard butterfly with close times of 1:55.79 and 1:55.85.

100-yard freestlyers Paradiese and Ronica Rogalski took first and second in the women's competition at 54:41 and 55:00. Rogalski swam for the Black Squad.

Duncan finished first in the men's 100-yard freestyle at 46:91. Wright finished second with a time of 47:25.

Black Squad member Dolansky took first in the women's 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.84. Gold Squad member Funk came in second at 2:08.83.

For the men, Juan Rodela of the Black Squad came in first in the 200-yard backstroke with a finish of 1:56.74. Ian Caswell of the Gold Squad came in second with a time of 1:57.57.

In the women's 500-yard freestyle, Mackus came in first, finishing in 5:08.30. Sample placed second with a time of 5:18.29.

Matt Martin finished first in the men's 500-yard freestyle with a finish of 4:37.68 while Kyle Jackson of the Gold Squad finished second with a time of 4:42.21.

In the second-to-last event of the night, the women's 200-yard breaststroke produced finishes of 2:24.31 by Brianna Reina of the Gold Squad and 2:26.81 by Rogalski of the Black Squad.

The men's 200-yard backstroke pulled in times of 2:02.25 by Bessenyei in first and 2:08.56 by Gui Rege of the Black Squad.

The last women's relay of the evening was the 400-yard freestyle with the Black Squad taking the first place finish. The team of Dolansky, Bean, Finnerty and Lakos finished in 3:32.69. The Gold Squad's team of Bromley, Kathryn Mullarkey, Dill, and Paradeise finished second with a time of 3:35.94.

For the men's side, the Black Squad team of Duncan, Diaz, Rodela and Seelbach finished first at 3:08.01 while the Gold Squad team of Sayce, Wright, Weis and Ian Caswell finished tied for first, also at 3:08.01.

The women's swim team will kickoff its regular season with a home meet against Vincennes on Oct. 27 at 4 p.m. The men's swim team will also start its regular season at home against Vincennes on Oct. 27.
