WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue swimming and diving teams will be participating in the third annual Breaststroke 4 Hope swim-a-thon, set for Saturday at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
The fundraising event for breast cancer research, prevention and awareness has expanded once again and is expected to feature over 250 swimming participants. The lap swimming portion of the event is slated to begin at noon.
All members of the Purdue swimming and diving teams will be on hand, some to participate in the lap counts and others to provide tips and encouragement. The Purdue women team's as well as the men's divers open their new season Friday with a dual meet at Miami (Ohio). The men's swimmers will race for the first time at next Saturday's Indiana Intercollegiates meet, which is slated to feature 14 teams representing eight colleges from around the state this year.
Two-time U.S. Olympian Katie Hoff is scheduled to be the distinguished guest swimmer on hand at Breaststroke 4 Hope for the second year in a row. She won three medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, including silver in the 400-meter freestyle.
The masters program iSWIM and Purdue's Greek Life community will also be represented by a large contingent at the event. Admission to Saturday's Breaststroke 4 Hope is free. Participants are striving to raise money for breast cancer education and awareness, reaching out into their communities to collect lap pledges and flat donations for the cause. Donations will be accepted on site as well Saturday. The event has collected over $10,000 in proceeds at the first two Breaststroke 4 Hope events, which were held in January 2012 and November 2012.
Breaststroke 4 Hope has continued to expand around the country. Similar fundraising swim-a-thon events have been held at or are scheduled for college campuses in Florida, Idaho, Michigan, North Carolina and Utah.
Speedo's Breaststroke 4 Hope Collection also supports the cause. Pink and black are the primary color combinations throughout the line of swimming accessories and clothing, which will be on sale at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center Saturday. Attendees are encouraged to wear pink clothing to the event in recognition of breast cancer awareness.
