Boiler Swimmers Participate in Junior Nationals

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Four members of the Purdue men's and women's Swimming and Diving team participated in the Junior National Championships over the weekend. All four will be incoming freshman for the Old Gold and Black this fall.

Tad Sayce and Patricia Finnerty took part in the Junior Championships Northeast in Bloomington, Ind., while Jeremy Wright and Will Seelbach participated in the Junior's Southeast in Orlando, Fla. over the weekend.

Sayce, from Nashua, N.H., captured two first-place finishes in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.48) and 100 butterfly (56.43) and a fourth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.

Wright placed eighth in the 100 free in a time of 54.16. In the preliminaries, he swam a lifetime-best of 53.71.

Finnerty finished third in both the 100 butterfly (1:04.15) and 200 butterfly (2:19.34).

Seelbach participated in the 100 and 200 freestyle, but did not place.

Also this week, sophomore Javier Diaz will represent Mexico in the Pan-America Games starting today in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Today, he swims 200 free, Wednesday he will swim the 100 free and on Friday Diaz will swim the 200 IM. He placed 12th in the 100 freestyle (44.89) at Big Ten's and was a member of the 200 free relay team that swam to a fourth-place finish in 1:21.48. He set a Lambert Pool Record in the 200 free against Indiana with a time of 1:39. Diaz finished the year tops on the Purdue squad in the 100 (44.86) and 200 free (1:37.74), second in the 200 IM (1:49.90), third in the 500 free (4:37.18) and fourth in the 50 free (20.77). He will compete in the 100 and 200 freestyle and the 200 IM.
