At-Large Academic All-District Teams: Men | Women
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- For their dual excellence in the pool and the classroom, Jamie Bissett and Lauren Gustafson of the Purdue swimming and diving teams have been selected as Capital One Academic All-District honorees.
Bissett is a general health sciences major with a 3.97 grade point average. Gustafson recently graduated with a 3.99 GPA while also majoring in general health sciences (health sciences professional). After being among the regional honorees in District 5, both Boilermakers will advance to the national ballot from which Academic All-America teams are selected.
Bissett recently completed his sophomore season, scoring in all three diving events at the Big Ten Championships for the second year in a row and qualifying for the NCAA Championships where he earned Honorable Mention All-America honors in the platform competition.
Gustafson was also an NCAA Championships qualifier, competing at the national championship meet for the second time in her career. She was also a Second Team Academic All-District honoree after qualifying for NCAAs as a sophomore in 2011. This season, Gustafson earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors while qualifying for the A final of the 50 and 100 free at the conference championship meet. She has already been awarded Big Ten and NCAA postgraduate scholarships and plans to continue her education at the Indiana University Medical School in Indianapolis.
Unlike many team sports, swimming and diving is part of the at-large group for the Capital One Academic All-District and All-America program. Each school is permitted to only nominate three male and three female student-athletes for consideration from sports like swimming and diving, tennis, golf, wrestling, ice hockey and others. Nominees must be sophomores and above with a GPA of 3.30 and higher. Casey Matthews and Matt Friede from swimming and diving as well as golfer Kishi Sinha were also nominated by Purdue athletics this year.
District 5 includes universities in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. Purdue swimmers Lauren Roth (2012), Matt Stewart (2011), Allie Smith (2011), Christine Inman (2010) and Emily Wetzel (2009) also garnered Academic All-District honorees in recent seasons. Inman and Wetzel went on to earn Academic All-America honors.
