WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Casey Matthews' national championship in 3-meter diving as one of eight Boilermakers to qualifying for the NCAA Championships highlighted Purdue women's swimming and diving's 2012-13 season.

The diving duo of Michelle Cabassol and Matthews accounted for 44 team points at the national championship meet in Indianapolis, helping the Boilers place 19th among the 43 scoring teams. It was Purdue's third-best showing in program history.

Matthews also won the 1-meter diving consolation final as well as the preliminary round of 3-meter diving at NCAAs. She returned to the active roster in December after missing the last two seasons due to shoulder and ankle surgeries. She claimed the program's first national championship crown and was the only women's swimming and diving athlete from the Big Ten this season to win an NCAA title.

Cabassol and Matthews were joined at the NCAA Championships by swimmers Allie Davis, Lauren Gustafson, Carly Mercer, Lauren Nichols, Nika Carlina Petric and Rhiannon Sheets. Gustafson (50 and 100 free) and Sheets (100 & 200 fly, 200 IM) raced in individual events and joined forces with their teammates in the three freestyle relay events.

Cabassol was also an All-American in 3-meter diving after placing fourth in the championship final of the event. She as well as Davis and Petric qualified for the NCAA Championships as freshmen. Matthews qualified for NCAAs for a third time, but first since 2010, and Gustafson, Nichols and Sheets went back for the second time as Boilers.

Matthews is now a five-time All-American. She joined six-time NCAA champion David Boudia as Purdue divers to win national titles under the tutelage of head diving coach Adam Soldati. Cabassol and Matthews finished one-two in the 3-meter diving competition at the Zone C Championships at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center to punch their tickets to the NCAA Championships.

Twelve members of the program scored team points individually at the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis. MacKenzie Tweardy, Gustafson and Matthews were all named Second Team All-Big Ten after each finished as the runner up in the championship final of an event. The 200 freestyle relay team of Mercer, Gustafson, Nichols and Sheets also posted an NCAA A Cut time at the conference championship meet.

Tweardy was the runner up in the championship finals of 1-meter and platform diving en route to scoring a team-high 36 points. Matthews broke the program record in 3-meter diving while placing as the conference runner up. Gustafson tied for second in the 100 free and eclipsed the program record in the prelims of the 50 free, qualifying for the A final of both events. Sheets was also a two-time A final qualifier in the 200 free and 200 fly.

Maddie Miskulin, Cabassol and Tweardy scored in all three diving events at the Big Ten Championships. Among the swimmers, Davis, Mercer and Sheets did likewise in three different individual events. Purdue placed fifth as a team, outscoring a pair of teams ranked above them in the national rankings entering the meet.

The Boilermakers won the seven-team Purdue Invitational the weekend before Thanksgiving. A number of fast time emerged from the weekend, highlighted by Emily Fogle breaking her own program record in the 100 breaststroke in the preliminaries Saturday afternoon. However, that proved to be Fogle's final meet of the season. A hip injury ended her junior campaign early but the two-time NCAA Championships qualifier should be granted a medical redshirt and return to the active roster as a junior in 2013-14. Fogle's 100 breast time at the Purdue Invitational would have earned her another berth to the NCAA Championships.

Mercer (Swimmer of the Week) and Miskulin (Diver of the Week) earned weekly honors from the Big Ten Conference office after the Purdue Invitational. Tracy Glaser also garnered Swimmers of the Week honors after winning her three events at the Ohio State Winter Invite in February.

Purdue had the opportunity to travel to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the annual training program. The Boilermakers spent the week between the conclusion of final exams on campus and Christmas at the Pine Crest school and swim facility, where they also won an outdoor dual meet against Florida Atlantic.

Purdue will have to bid adieu to a number of talented and accomplished seniors, including Gustafson and Nichols, but are scheduled to return many experienced swimmers and divers for the 2013-14 season. Six of the eight team members that competed at NCAAs will be back, including Cabassol, Matthews and Sheets.
