WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue divers Michelle Cabassol and Casey Matthews punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships Thursday by finishing one-two in the finals of the women's 3-meter competition on the opening day of the Zone C Diving Championships at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

Cabassol won the 3-meter competition with a personal season-best score of 351.75 in the finals to finish the day with a combined score of 660.80. Matthews also improved on her preliminary round score and finished the day with a combined score of 653.05. The event featured 55 divers in the preliminary round.

Matthews has qualified for the NCAA Championships for the third time in her career. She also represented the Boilers at the 2009 and 2010 national championship meet before missing the last two seasons due to injury. Cabassol, meanwhile, has qualified as a redshirt-freshman. She also sat out last year.

Ohio State's Cheyenne Cousineau and Kentucky's Christa Cabot also punched their tickets to NCAAs in the women's 3-meter competition Thursday. In the men's 1-meter, Kentucky's Greg Ferrucci, Indiana's Darian Schmidt and Ohio State's Shane Miskiel qualified for the national championship meet.

Jamie Bissett was the Purdue men's top finisher, placing fifth from the 1-meter springboard Thursday. That showing is 13th in line for the nine qualifying berths from Zone C available to the men. So there's a slight chance it would be good enough to earn Bissett a trip to NCAAs but he'll look to do better in the 3-meter and platform competitions the next two days.

Cabassol, Matthews and the rest of the day-one qualifiers will have to continue competing at Zones this week so they are eligible for multiple events at NCAAs later this month in Indianapolis.

Bissett's score of 370.50 in 1-meter finals Thursday was a Purdue season best and good for fifth in program history. Layne Rogers finished one spot behind Bissett in the finals. Alec Back also advanced among the top 18 in a 1-meter competition that featured 47 divers.

Cabassol's score was good for seventh best in program history.

The Zone C Diving Championships continue Friday at 1 p.m. with the men's 3-meter and women's 1-meter.
