MINNEAPOLIS -- New school records posted by Lauren Gustafson and Casey Matthews as well as runner-up finishes from both Boilers along with two more second-place showings for MacKenzie Tweardy highlighted the 2013 Big Ten Championships for Purdue women's swimming and diving.

The Boilermakers performed well in all three freestyle relays, highlighted by posting an NCAA A Cut time in the 200 free relay Thursday evening. The NCAA made a change to how it selects its swimmers for the NCAA Championships next month, going to more of an individual-based matrix. But as long as Purdue qualifies one individual for the national championship meet, as expected, the Boilers' relays should be in the mix as well.

The NCAA will announce the full list of NCAA qualifiers for the women's national championship meet next week (March 5 or 6). The three-day, six-session meet is being hosted by IUPUI in Indianapolis this year.

Purdue took fifth at the Big Ten Championships with 363 team points. Twelve Boilers scored points individually.

Gustafson, Matthews and Tweardy were all named Second Team All-Big Ten. Tweardy was the runner up in the championship finals of 1-meter and platform diving. Matthews took second in the championship final of 3-meter diving. Gustafson finished tied for second in the A final of the 100 free after having the top time in the preliminaries.

Gustafson's week in the Twin Cities also featured a new program record (22.49) in the prelims of the 50 free, clipping one hundredth of a second off the mark set by Ariel Martin at the 2011 Big Ten Championships. Gustafson swam on all five Purdue relay teams over the course of the seven-session meet, helping the Boilers take third in the 400 and 800 free and fourth in the 200 free.

In her first Big Ten Championships since 2010, Matthews proved that she's still one of the best divers in the conference. Injuries have forced her to focus strictly on springboard events, but she managed to qualify for the championship final of both the 1-meter and 3-meter. Her championship-round score of 388.50 led to a runner-up finish on the 3-meter board and eclipsed Erin Mertz's 2011 program record by .15 tenths of a point.

Tweardy moved up to third place on the Purdue all-time leaders lists with her runner-up scores in the 1-meter (325.40) and platform (343.30) competitions. She finished the week as Purdue's top individual scorer, earning the Boilers 36 points while scoring in all three diving disciplines. Michelle Cabassol and Maddie Miskulin also scored in each of the three diving competitions.

Among the swimmers, Allie Davis (200, 500 & 1650 free), Carly Mercer (50, 100 & 200 free) and Rhiannon Sheets (100 & 200 fly, 200 free) scored in three different individual events. All contributed to relays as well, with Mercer and Sheets joining Gustafson on each of the three freestyle relays.

Alex Todd (100 fly), Francesca Marr (200 breast), Gustafson (100 free), Sheets (200 free) and the 200 free relay team of Mercer, Gustafson, Lauren Nichols and Sheets each posted the second-fastest times in program history in their respective events at Big Tens. Todd came up just one hundredth of a second shy of the benchmark.

Other Boilers to either join or move up on the Purdue all-time Top 10 lists last week included: Sarah Boylen (200 fly), Brittany Fozkos (100 back), Lizzy Lyon (400 IM), Nika Carlina Petric (500 & 1650 free), Missy Robinson (100 & 200 breast), Stephanie Schlobohm (100 back & 200 IM), Cabassol (1-meter & platform diving), Davis (200, 500 & 1650 free), Mercer (50, 100 & 200 free), Miskulin (1- & 3-meter diving) and Nichols (100 free).

The Boilermakers are slated to host the Boiler-Make-It NCAA Last Chance Meet Saturday at noon on Saturday. The divers will continue to train for the NCAA Zone C Championships, which Purdue will host this season March 14-16.
