WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Selected members of Purdue women's swimming travels to Columbus, Ohio, this weekend for the two-day Ohio State Winter Invite, a meet scheduled to feature preliminary and finals heats as well as women's competitors from eight universities.
The action at OSU's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion begins with preliminaries Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m. The finals are set for 5 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday. No diving events are being contested this weekend.
The group of 11 Boilermakers competing this weekend includes: Nora Brolsma, Alex Carmack, Julia Comodeca, Samantha Feulner, Brittany Fozkos, Tracy Glaser, Anji Li, Carly Marshall, Madison Monteiro, Megan Roach and Ellie Roeing. The entire travel party except for Monteiro, a true freshman, has competed at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion before, either for the Ohio State Invitational in December 2011 or OSU Winter Invite meets of seasons past.
Along with Ohio State and Purdue, women's swimmers from Akron, Baldwin Wallace, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan and Toledo are also scheduled to race this weekend.
The Boilermakers are expected to don their special high-speed suits in an effort to post personal season-best times. The taper-based training program has also been in effect over the last week. With 11 Purdue swimmers traveling, they should have a chance to team up and compete in the four relay events scheduled for the weekend. Saturday's action features primarily the 100-yard events and the 200-yard relays. The 400-yard relays and 200-yard individual events are set for Sunday. The 400 IM is in the mix for Saturday and the mile is the final event of Sunday's prelims.
Feulner has garnered Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honors for her season-best performances at the Ohio State Winter Invite each of the last two seasons. She won the 50 and 100 freestyle as both a freshman and a sophomore and added a 200 free win to victory total a year ago. Carmack was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after winning the 100 breaststroke and placing second to Roach in the 200 breast last season.
Comodeca was a winner in the 200 backstroke in 2012 and Roach swept the breaststroke events at the 2011 OSU Winter Invite.
