WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Both of Purdue's swimming and diving teams earned recognition from the conference office on Tuesday as freshman Casey Matthews was named Big Ten Women's Diver of the Week and senior Andrew Langenfeld garnered the conference's Male Swimmer of the Week award.
Matthews won the 3-meter and platform diving competitions in a triple dual that featured Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. The Getzville, N.Y., native scored a personal-best 250.50 from the 10-meter platform, which improves her standing in 10th on Purdue's all-time performance list in the event, and 310.65 from the 3-meter springboard to top both fields. Matthews also dove to a runner-up finish, behind teammate Ashley Karnes, in the 1-meter competition with her 281.30 score. Matthews won two diving events at the same meet for the second time in three weeks. She swept both springboard events at Michigan State on Jan. 17.
Langenfeld earned two of Purdue's four wins in the pool during a double dual against Minnesota and Wisconsin at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. The Centralia, Ill., native outswam the 50 freestyle field with his time of 20.18 and touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly in 48.67. Langenfeld also earned a season-best time of 1:49.11 while finishing second in the 200 butterfly and swam the third leg on the 400 freestyle relay team that placed second in a season-best time of 3:00.31. Langenfeld, the school record holder in the 50 freestyle, holds Purdue's fastest time this season in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly and has contributed to the team's fastest 200 and 400 freestyle and 200 and 400 medley relays.
Matthews and the rest of her team have wrapped up the regular season and are now focused on the Big Ten Championships, scheduled for Feb. 19-21 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Langenfeld and the rest of the Purdue men host Indiana in the season's final dual meet Saturday at noon.
