WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue swim teams have received their best-ever national rankings by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). In the Nov. 30 polls, the Boilermaker men are placed at 15th and the Boilermaker women are 25th.
"This is so exciting for our program," Purdue women's head coach Cathy Wright-Eger said. "This is only the second time we've broken the top 25 and we're very excited. The women have been working hard for this and they definitely deserve it."
The Purdue men are off to a great start this season and own a 4-0 record (1-0 Big Ten). The team has been able to defeat Vincennes, Miami (Ohio), Evansville and Iowa to kick off the 2000-01 campaign.
"This is the highest national ranking that we have received for as long as I can remember," Purdue men's head coach Dan Ross said. "The team has really worked hard together and all 25 guys have contributed in some way. The next six weeks of competitions will be important to see if we can hold onto our top 20 status."
The Boilermaker women are also off to a winning start on the season with a 6-1 record (2-1 Big Ten). The team has recorded defeats over Vincennes, Miami (Ohio), 18th-ranked Notre Dame, Evansville, Ohio State and Iowa. It's only loss was a close finish with Penn State.
The Old Gold and Black will look to hang on to their rankings as they head into the Christmas break and training period. Both teams will head to Florida for those training trips and competition. The women will swim at the Boca Raton Invitational on Jan. 3 at 10 a.m. and the men will swim at the New Year's Invitational on Jan. 6. The time is still to be determined.
