Women's Swimming Fares Well At First Meet Of Year

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's swim team defeated the Vincennes Trailblazers today at Lambert Pool by a score of 163-18 in its first exhibition meet of the year.

"We finished well today," Purdue assistant coach Darlene Renie said. "The meet today was good preparation for our first competition meet at Miami tomorrow. I think this type of meet was good to prepare the team for the right mindset of regular-season competition."

The Boilermakers made many strides today with aspect to the team's top times for the 2000-01 season. Sophomore Patricia Finnerty moved into third place on the 200 individual medley list with a time of 2:16.96, while junior Katie Mullarkey moved into fourth place with a time of 2:13.11.

In the 50 freestyle, sophomore Kim Paradiese finished first with a time of 24.62. That time was good enough for a second-place spot on the top times list.

Finishing first in her race with a time of 55:19, freshman Jenni Bean moved into fifth place on the 100 freestyle top time list for Purdue.

The 200 freestyle was finished first by freshmen Autumn Sample with a time of 2:00.61. Her time put her into the third place on the top times list.

Swimming the 100 butterfly, Purdue's Sarah Dougall, a senior, produced a time of 1:02.02 to put herself at the top of the leader board. Sophomore Lindsay Lange finished second with a time of 1:05.56 to also mark her place on the top times list.

In the 100 backstroke, Finnerty finished first with a time of 1:04.03, while freshman Katie Clark finished second with a time of 1:05.54.

Sophomore Lisa Dolansky finished first for Purdue in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:10.86, which was also good enough to put her in second place on the top times list. Sophomore Lindsey Goldsmith finished second in the race with a time of 5:24.66 for a top times placing of fourth.

In the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Shannon Funk finished first for Purdue with a time of 1:09.86. She also placed first on the top times list for the 2000-01 Boilermakers.

In the relays, the team of Goldsmith, Sample, sophomore Laura Dill, and senior Gyongyver Lakos took first place in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:40.81. In the 200 medley relay, the team of Dill, Clark, Paradiese, and Funk finished first with a time of 1:56.24. Both relays were season-best times.

In the diving portion of the meet, junior Molly MacFarlane took first place with 206.70 points. Sophomores Carrie Daugherty and Heather Bachman also competed in the exhibition.

The Boilermakers kick off their regular season when they travel to Miami (Ohio) Saturday, Oct. 28. The meet will begin at 4 p.m.
