WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The men's and women's swim team kicked off the exhibition season Oct. 23 with the annual Gold and Black scrimmage. The intrasquad meet gives head coaches Dan Ross and Cathy-Wright Eger an opportunity to see how their experienced swimmers have developed and to evaluate the new freshmen.
On the men's side, Vilmos Kovacs won both the 200 fly (1:53.26) and the 200 breaststroke (2:03.99). Kovacs is the three-time defending Big Ten champion in the 200 breaststroke.
Fellow senior Kirk Larsen looked just as impressive as the Palatine, Ill. native captured first place in the 50 freestyle (21.52) and the 100 freestyle (47.04). Last year, Larsen swam the third leg of the 200 free relay team that placed 14th at the NCAA Championships earning honorable mention All-America honors.
On the women's side, senior Erika Whyte provided a bright spot as she touched first in the 50 freestyle (24.18) and the 100 freestyle (52.70), just ahead of junior Nicki Lively in both events. Sophomore Kelly Mackus looked just as impressive winning the 500 freestyle (5:03.79) and the 1000 freestyle (10:17.97).
Freshman Karen Stender looked outstanding in her first collegiate action by finishing first in both the 200 IM (2:09.55) and 200 fly (2:07.23).
Both the men and the women return to the pool on Friday October 30th in West Lafayette against Vincennes in an exhibition meet. On Saturday, the woman host Iowa at Lambert Pool at 10 a.m.
