April 26, 1998
Every year, the Big Ten awards a Medal of Honor to one male and one female athlete at each school for their achievements in the classroom and as an athlete as well as for the leadership and character they displayed to their coaches and teammates. Senior swimmer Marisa Watts received the female Big Ten Medal of Honor after showing her excellence in the pool by earning two consecutive honorable mention All-America honors in the 1650 freestyle. She was also named the women's Most Valuable Swimmer two years and won the Purdue Pride in Swimming award in 1998 for her relentless effort to the team. Her abilities as a student are evidenced by three Academic All-Big Ten honors and four Academic All-America honors. Watts concluded her swimming career by leading the Boilers to a 31st-place finish at the NCAA Championships last month.
