WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boilermaker softball team started its Thursday by helping out with Glen Acres Elementary school's Walk To School Week. The event is to motivate children to walk to school and get exercise, while reading a story at each check point along the way.

The players spent about an hour with the children, helping with everything from reading to assisting the crossing guard. The Boilermakers supplied energy and enthusiasm both about reading and exercise, while sharing high-fives with many of the children.

The team kicks off its Black & Gold Series at 5 p.m. Thursday. A 4 p.m. Friday contest and 10 a.m. Sunday game wrap up the fall season. The Black & Gold Series is open to the public. Admission is free.
