WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Freshman designated player Katy McJunkin was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this season after leading the Purdue bats in the team's weekend series win over Illinois.
McJunkin batted .714 with four RBI and a run. She boasted a 1.286 slugging percentage and .714 on-base percentage. She went 5-for-7 with a double and a home run. In Game 1 against the Illini, McJunkin went 2-for-2 with three-run home run, her first career long ball, and an RBI double. In Game 2, she had one of Purdue's five hits. In the series finale, the rookie went 2-for-3 to lead the Boilermaker bats.
McJunkin is batting .371 on the season, second among Boilermaker players, with 13 RBI and 11 runs scored. She has been the team's starting designated player in the last 17 games.
The Freshman of the Week honor is her second of the season, alongside a Co-Freshman of the Week award on March 31. The Big Ten weekly accolade is the fourth for the Boilermakers.
Purdue (24-21-1, 11-4 Big Ten) is currently in second place in the Big Ten standings, heading into Wednesday's 1 p.m. doubleheader with league-leader No. 3 Michigan.
