WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boilermaker softball team, which made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008, is reaping the benefits of success in 2009 as Purdue is listed among those receiving votes in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I Top 25 Preseason Poll.

The NFCA poll mention is Purdue's first during the tenure of head coach Kim Maher, who is in her fourth season with the team. The Boilermakers have never earned an NFCA Top 25 ranking in the program's 15-year history. NFCA rankings have been released since 1995.

The Boilermakers received votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 listings twice in 2008, but have never cracked that poll's Top 25 rankings. Purdue garnered three points in the final poll of the year and tallied two points in the Feb. 19 poll after knocking off No. 7 Baylor on Feb. 15. USA Softball began its rankings in 2003.

Purdue is slated to face four foes ranked in the NFCA preseason poll in 2009, including No. 4 UCLA, which the Boilermakers will take on during the season's opening weekend.

The Boilermakers kick off the 2009 campaign at Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament in Westwood, Calif., from Feb. 6-8. The event will pit Purdue against the fourth-ranked Bruins as well as Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton and Pacific. Live statistics of all five of Purdue's contests will be available on purduesports.com via the GameTracker feature.
