WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boilermaker softball team swept a Saturday doubleheader with Butler, taking the games 1-0 and 8-3. The pitchers carried the load in Game 1 and the hitters returned the favor in Game 2.
The Boilermakers close out their fall ball season with a three-game Black & Gold Series beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday. The scrimmages continue with Game 2 at 4 p.m. Friday and Game 3 at 10 a.m. Sunday.
Purdue 1, Butler 0
The Boilermaker pitchers struck out eight batters and allowed just two hits as Purdue held off Butler in a 1-0 Game 1 win. Sophomore Lilly Fecho issued two Ks in four innings of work, while juniors Alex Whittemore and Lexy Moore each struck out three to wrap up the win.
Kristin Gutierrez struck out six Boilermakers in the complete game effort for the Bulldogs.
Purdue posted four hits in the win, one each from sophomore Mary Gooding, junior Gabi Brown, senior Tori Chiodo and freshman Katy McJunkin. Gooding plated the lone run of the game with a third-inning RBI double. The hit scored Chiodo, who had singled and moved to second on a sacrifice.
The Boilermakers stranded two runners in the fifth after McJunkin singled and freshman Michelle Poe was hit by a pitch with two outs.
Purdue 8, Butler 3
The Boilermakers piled on eight runs over the first four innings to secure an 8-3 win. Senior Danielle Fletcher led the Purdue bats with a 2-for-2 effort, two runs and two RBI in the game. Seven other players contributed hits.
Junior Lexy Moore struck out four batters in four innings of work, while junior Alex Whittemore and sophomore Lilly Fecho closed out the game, allowing just three hits.
Purdue jumped on the scoreboard with two runs on a hit and an error in the second. Sophomore Paris Andrew drew a leadoff walk and went to third on a double by senior Danielle Fletcher. Senior Lauren Grant brought her home with a sacrifice fly. A walk to Chiodo gave the Boilers runners at the corners again, when a dropped fly ball allowed Fletcher to score. The Boilers loaded the bases with a walk to Gooding, but couldn't add to the 2-0 lead.
Butler answered with a run on two hits in the third. After a leadoff single, a fielder's choice and a steal set the table for an RBI single by Krista Hakola.
The Boilermakers countered with four runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the inning. Junior Ashley Burkhardt led off with a double to right center and went to third as sophomore Paris Andrew took two bases on a fielding error by the third baseman. Fletcher brought both home with a double off the right center wall. Senior Lauren Grant knocked Fletcher in with a single to right and wound up at second on the throw home. A double by senior Tori Chiodo put Purdue up 6-1.
The Bulldogs strung together three hits and an error for two runs in the fourth. A leadoff double and two singles plated the first run. A throwing error on a steal attempt accounted for the second score.
Purdue got the runs back in the bottom of the fourth, plating two runs on three hits. A bunt single by senior MaryBeth Pavlick and a walk to sophomore Sydney Pencek set up an RBI single by redshirt senior Maia Monchek. A walk to freshman Katy McJunkin loaded the bases with one out. Freshman Lexi Valone singled to bring Pencek home and cap the scoring at 8-3.
