EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 13 Northwestern Wildcats again proved too strong for the Boilermaker softball team, issuing Purdue a 8-0 loss in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader.
The Boilermakers managed just two hits in the contest, while allowing Northwestern eight runs on 11 hits and an error.
Lauren Delaney (26-6) earned the complete-game victory, while junior Dana Alcocer struck out two in the losing effort for Purdue.
The Boilermakers put two on to no avail in each of the first two frames. Senior Ashley Hall reached on an error and was joined on base by sophomore Kelsey Haupert, who walked, in the first. In the second inning, a leadoff single by sophmore Jenna Alexander and a walk to junior Christina Trauger accounted for the base runners, but again Purdue could not capitalize.
For its part, Northwestern managed three runs on three hits and an error in the first. Nicole Pauly put the Wildcats on the board with a two-run double. Pauly went to third on a base hit and scored on an errant throw by the catcher.
Junior Candace Curtis sent a one-out single through the right side in the third, but was left stranded.
Pauly added another run to the NU tally with a leadoff home run in the third.
The Wildcats combined a trio of singles for two runs in the fourth and ended the contest with a two-run shot to center field by Robin Thompson in the fifth.
The Boilermakers (30-16, 6-6 Big Ten) look to get back on the winning track on Tuesday when they play host to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
