Final Stats

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue softball team managed just one run in Game 1 against Butler, but it was enough to earn the team a 1-0 victory over the Bulldogs and extend its current win streak to six games.

The Boilermakers got the first base runner of the game as sophomore DaQueta Johnson (Ontario, Calif.) singled to left to lead off the second inning. Pinch runner Jamie Dum (Indianapolis, Ind.) was caught leaving first early, vacating the base with two outs. Sophomore Erika Peterson (Irvine, Calif.) filled the empty space, reaching on a walk. A strikeout, however, left her stranded.

Butler put a runner on in the third when Jill Meinhold drew a one-out walk. The Bulldogs sacrificed her over to second before a fly ball ended the inning.

Purdue loaded the bases with two outs in the third, setting up their first crack at a score. Senior Shelli Messer (Greenfield, Ind.) reached on an error by the first baseman. She then moved to third on a single to left center by junior Staci Falzon (Carlsbad, Calif.). Falzon advanced to second on the throw to third, opening first base for senior Andrea Hillsey (White Lake, Mich.) who was intentionally walked. A strikeout got Butler out of the jam.

The Bulldogs tallied their first hit of the game as Melissa Lemrick singled up the middle with one out in the fourth. A sacrifice moved her to second, but a pop up accounted for the third out of the inning.

Andrea Walker singled up the middle to lead off the sixth inning. Pinch runner Lynn Hohs was then sacrificed over to second before moving to third on a wild pitch. The Purdue defense remained strong, forcing a line out and ground out to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard.

 

 

An RBI double by Johnson scored the game's first run in the bottom of the sixth. Falzon led off with a single through the right side, then moved to second on a sacrifice by Hillsey, setting up Johnson's RBI opportunity. Junior Tricia Lilley (North Canton, Ohio) joined her on base with a single into short left field. A fly out and a strikeout left kept both from making their away around the bases.

Butler would not go down without a fight, putting a runner on second in the top of the seventh. Jenny Jacobs singled up the middle to start the stanza, then moved to second on a sacrifice. A fly out and looking strikeout sealed the Purdue shutout victory.

The Boilermakers tallied one run on six hits, including 2-for-3 performances by Falzon and Johnson. Butler managed three hits and committed one error in the game.

Sophomore Brooke Baker (Schererville, Ind.) garnered the complete-game shutout victory, striking out four and moving her record to 12-8 on the season. Nikki Naffziger was charged with the loss for Butler.

Purdue will look to sweep the Bulldogs with a win in Game 2 of the doubleheader.
