AUBURN, Ala. - The Boilermaker softball team had the tying run on base in the seventh inning, but couldn't push it across, falling 2-1 to Jacksonville State Saturday night.

Sophomore Lilly Fecho (3-3) struck out six and sat down the final 15 batters she faced in order, but was saddled with the loss. Logan Green (3-1) picked up the win for JSU.

The Gamecocks managed two runs on five hits and an error, while Purdue scored its one run on four hits.

Both teams stranded a pair of runners in the first inning. JSU left two aboard after two singles, while the Boilermakers were held off the scoreboard after Varsho and Fletcher drew walks.

A solo home run by Amanda Maldonado put the Gamecocks on the scoreboard in the second and the team combined a pair of hits and an error for a score in the third. Taylor Sloan drove in the second score with an RBI double in the third.

The Boilers got one run back on an RBI single by junior Ashley Burkhardt in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Paris Andrew set the table for the score, leading off with a double and swiping third. Senior Maia Monchek walked to put runners at the corners for Burkhardt, who delivered with a sharp single to left. A strikeout and ground out kept Purdue from tying it up.

Purdue threatened in the fifth as Varsho reached on a bunt single and went to third on an illegal pitch and a wild pitch. A strikeout and pop up left her stranded.

After a quiet sixth inning and top of the seventh, the Boilers had a final shot at the game. Junior Gabi Brown led off with a pinch hit double, but the Gamecocks spoiled Purdue's upset bid by turning a double play to cap the game.

The Boilers (4-6-1) return to action at 10:30 a.m. Sunday when they kick off a doubleheader against Mississippi Valley State and the host Auburn Tigers.
