Last-Second Goal Gives Soccer Victory

Oct. 8, 2000

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Freshmen Forward Jennie Moppert put away her own rebound with seven seconds left in the game to lift Purdue's women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Wisconsin at the Purdue Varsity Soccer Complex today. The win brings the Boilermakers' record to 9-4 (4-3 Big Ten), and dropped Wisconsin to 8-6 (5-3 Big Ten).

The lone goal came when sophomore sweeper Elise Berry's clearing pass sailed over the Badger defense and went right to a breaking Moppert. Wisconsin goalkeeper Kelly Conway stopped Moppert's first shot, but Moppert gathered the rebound and put it past a defender, and into the back of the net. The goal was Moppert's sixth of the season, and her third game winner.

"Jennie plays with a lot of heart," Purdue head coach Rob Klatte said. "She creates a lot of opportunities for the team."

Purdue's defense put together another solid effort in holding Wisconsin's offense to 11 shots and no goals. Boilermaker goalkeeper Elizabeth Boldt, a junior, made two saves to earn the win in Purdue's sixth shutout of the season.

"The defensive third did a great job today," Klatte said. "They didn't give Wisconsin any real good chances."

The Boilermakers will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 13, when they visit Illinois. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
