COLD NOVEMBER RAIN: Recent postseasons - not including this year's Big Ten Tournament Championship run - have not been kind to the Boilermakers ... Purdue has not won or scored in an NCAA Tournament match since 2003, when it came from behind twice to knock off Western Michigan (W, 3-2) in the second-round at Champaign, Ill. ... since then, the Boilermakers have twice traveled to Milwaukee, where they lost 6-5 in penalty kicks to UW-Milwaukee in 2005 and were shut out 1-0 by Marquette in 2006 ... Purdue's all-time NCAA Tournament record is 2-3-2.
YOU BETTER RECOGNIZE: Purdue's women's soccer team will be recognized at halftime of the men's basketball game Thursday night as the Boilermakers take on Bethune-Cookman at Mackey Arena ... tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ... single-game tickets are priced at $18.
GOLDEN GRIZZLIES VS. GRIZZLED VETERANS: Purdue and Oakland meet for the fourth time in series history and first since 2004, when much of this year's senior class were still freshmen ... the Boilermakers won their last meeting with the Golden Grizzlies at home 3-0 ... Purdue out shot Oakland that match 18-11 and received goals from Crystal Rivas, Jill Sarbaugh and Shauna Stapleton ... Maureen Carey and Lauren Mason each played 45 minutes for the combined shutout ... Oakland won its first meeting at Purdue 2-0 in 2001 ... the Boilermakers returned the favor the following year by beating the Grizz at home 4-3 in overtime ... Oakland's three goals that match represent the most allowed by Purdue in a single victory.
VIEW FROM THE SUMMIT: The Golden Grizzlies of Oakland University received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after downing Western Illinois 3-1 in the Summit League Tournament Championship ... Western Illinois won the regular season title with an 8-0 record, while Oakland placed second at 6-2 ... Oakland is 0-4 all-time at the NCAA Tournament, most recently losing to Notre Dame 7-1 last year in South Bend, Ind.
THE KODIAK KIDS: The Golden Grizzlies claim three high-scoring attackers: Kristi Tomczyk, Jessica Boyle and Jamie Hulet, who have combined for 21 goals and 15 assists, equaling 57 points ... Tomczyk leads her team with nine goals, seven assists, 70 shots and 36 shots on goal ... Boyle and Hulet have each scored six times ... on defense, Oakland's minutes in goal have been split between Elizabeth Watza and Kim Herbst ... Herbst started a majority of the matches at the start of 2007, but Watza recently pitched back-to-back complete game victories in the Summit League Tournament games against Southern Utah (W, 2-1) and Western Illinois (W, 3-1) ... Watza is 5-1-1 with a 1.15 goals-against average, while Herbst is 4-5-1 with a 1.47 GAA.
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!: The Boilermakers didn't have to worry about being selected for the NCAA Tournament, but they still guaranteed themselves a spot by claiming the Big Ten Tournament title over Ohio State 3-1 ... Purdue's tournament title was the first of the program's 10-year history, and likely helped the Old Gold and Black play host and receive its first NCAA Tournament seeding as one of four No. 2's ... the Boilermakers are the fifth different Big Ten school to win the tournament title in as many years, following Illinois (2003), Ohio State (2004), Wisconsin (2005) and Penn State (2006).
THE ENERGIZER BOILERMAKERS - THEY KEEP SCORING & SCORING: Purdue was without starting forwards Jill Sarbaugh and Parrissa Eyorokon for most of the Big Ten Tournament, but that didn't stop the Boilermakers from averaging three goals per match ... Purdue defeated Northwestern, Illinois and Ohio State (all for the second time this year) by a combined score of 9-2 at the tournament ... Loredana Riverso led all players with four goals on just eight shots, seven of which were on frame ... tournament offensive MVP Shauna Stapleton contributed three assists and one goal ... Jessica Okoroafo scored twice on 10 shots (nine on goal), including the game-winner vs. Ohio State ... Purdue placed a combined 30-of-48 shots on goal for an impressive .625 average.
...AND HOW `BOUT THAT BOILER `D'?: The Boilermakers' offense was so potent at the Big Ten Tournament mostly because its tenacious defense repeatedly forced turnovers at the midfield ... Purdue surrendered an average of seven shots per match, with only two getting past Jenny Bradfisch - one was a Kelsey Hans deep ball that hit the upper left corner from 30-yards away, the other was a corner kick that took a bounce inside the six-yard box and was hooked under the crossbar by OSU's Caitlin Colfer ... overall, the defense - led by defensive MVP Jordyn Shaffer - cleared 13 of 14 corner kicks.
LOST IN THE BOX SCORE: Jessica Stellhorn's assist on Loredana Riverso's insurance goal Sunday vs. Ohio State represented the 1000th point scored in program history ... Riverso has scored a goal in four-straight matches twice this season (11/2 - present and 9/21-9/30), and is only the third Boilermaker to accomplish this feat in 10 years, joining Shauna Stapleton (9/7-9/14, 2007) and Jennie Moppert (9/1-9/10, 2000) ... with two assists vs. the Buckeyes, Stapleton has scored a point in four-straight games for the second time this season ... Purdue was the first Big Ten Tournament Champion in its 14-year history to score three goals or more in three-straight matches ... with five-consecutive wins over Ohio State, the Boilermakers are one win shy of evening the series record at 7-7-2.
NATIONAL AWARDS FROM THE TOP DRAWER: Top Drawer Soccer recently announced its Women's College Team of the Season on its website topdrawersoccer.com ... Parrissa Eyorokon was named to its second team, while Shauna Stapleton and Jessica Okoroafo were listed among 49 honorable mention selections ... in a bit of irony, the only two goalkeepers who defeated Purdue this year - Louisville's Joanna Haig and Penn State's Alyssa Naeher - were named first and second-team goalkeepers, respectively ... also this week, Stapleton was tabbed for the second time this season to a Soccer Buzz Magazine Elite Team of the Week; she first received this honor on Sept. 12 after scoring three goals in wins over Washington and Portland.
