WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Freshman midfielder Lauren Montenegro has been named Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week. This is the first Big Ten Player of the Week honor for a Purdue freshman since Jessica Okoroafo was named Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 3, 2005.

Montenegro played all 90 minutes in the Boilermakers' 1-0 victory over Northwestern on Friday. The Diamond Bar, Calif. native was part of a defense that limited the Wildcats to just five shots, with only one on goal.

In Purdue's 1-0 win at Wisconsin, Montenegro chalked up an assist to go with a smothering defensive effort. She played 76 minutes in the Boilermakers' second straight shutout. The Badgers were held scoreless on ten shots, including five on goal.

For the weekend, Purdue's opponents were held scoreless on 15 shot attempts. Their third and fourth shutouts of the year propelled the Boilermakers to a 2-0 start to their Big Ten season.

Montenegro is having a stellar freshman campaign thus far. She has four points on one goal and two assists, but her one goal was a game-winner against Illinois State. She was named Defensive MVP of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup and has excelled in her role as the team's starting defensive midfielder, winning countless headers and one-on-one situations.

Other winners of this week's Big Ten Player of the Week awards were Laura Heyboer (Offensive) of Michigan State and Lauren Robertson (Co-Defensive) of Ohio State.

Fans can see two of the reigning Big Ten Players of the Week this weekend at the Varsity Soccer Complex when Lauren Montenegro and the Boilermakers (8-3-1, 2-0) host Laura Heyboer and the Michigan State Spartans (10-1-0, 2-0) on Sunday. Purdue and Michigan State are also the only two 2-0 teams in the Big Ten.

Purdue will first take on Michigan this Friday at 4 p.m. Sunday's match is slated for 1 p.m.
