Game 6 Notes
The Purdue women's soccer team wraps up the Under Armour Invitational Sunday when it takes on Southern California in Fullerton, Calif.
“We watched USC and they have a very athletic and talented team,” head coach Robert Klatte said. “They have great distribution and move the ball very, very well. They are extremely mobile and pose us some different problems that we haven’t seen yet this year.”
The Boilermakers took their opening game in the invitational Friday night with a 2-1 victory over the host Titans.
Purdue (3-1-1) found success early when Alexis Tryba scored from the right post eight minutes into the game. Katie Leinert was credited with the assist on the play. Cal State Fullerton (1-2) responded with a goal of their own just 13 minutes later. Brisa Gonzalez beat Carianne Betts from inside the 18-yard box to tie the score at one.
The Boilermakers answered the Titan goal in the 30th minute. Freshman Hadley Stuart was taken down from behind inside the penalty box which led to a penalty kick. Senior Liz Secue stepped up and fired a shot past the Titans’ keeper for the eventual game-winning goal. The goal was the first of her career.
Purdue's offense has come alive as of late. The Boilermakers are averaging 2.2 goals per game including 2.8 over their current four game unbeaten streak. They boast 20.2 shots per game compared to just 6.8 by their opponents.
USC (1-1-2) enters Sunday’s contest off a 0-0 tie with North Carolina Greensboro in its first game in the Under Armour Invitational. The Trojans return eight starters from a team that finished 12-6-3 a year ago including a birth in the NCAA Tournament. Ashli Sandoval leads the Trojans with two goals on the season, the only goals the team has scored. Alyssa Dávila also returns after scoring nine goals and recording 23 points last season.
Purdue and USC have never met before on the pitch. The Boilermakers hold a 4-3 record all-time against schools from the Pac 10 Conference including a pair of wins over Oregon, and victories against Oregon State and Washington. The only other teams Purdue has faced from the Pac 10 are Stanford and California.
The Boilermakers and Trojans kick off at 2 p.m. ET at Titan Stadium. Results of the game can be found at purduesports.com.
