BOILERMAKER NOTEBOOK - WEEK 1
TRYOUT TODAY: The Boilermakers will hold an open tryout on Monday, Aug. 23 at 4 p.m. ... all female students enrolled at Purdue, freshmen through senior class, are encouraged to attend the camp, which will take place at the Varsity Soccer Complex (intersection of McCormick Road and Cherry Lane)... soccer hopefuls will be required to supply their own playing gear, including cleats, shinguards, shirts and shorts ... participants also will be required to sign a release form prior to engaging in any workouts or practice drills ... transportation to the complex from the Mackey Arena ramp will be provided ... the van is scheduled to leave at 4 p.m. for more information regarding the tryout, please contact head coach Robert Klatte at (765) 496-3396.
BOILERMAKER CHALLENGE CUP: Purdue welcomes Cincinnati and New Mexico to West Lafayette for the sixth edition of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup (Aug. 27 to 29) ... the Boilermakers have won their tournament three times in the past five years, beating Delaware (1999), West Virginia (2000) and Buffalo (2002) ... other champions include SMU (2001) and Drake (2003) ... following the Sunday afternoon match between New Mexico and Purdue, the Boilermaker Challenge Cup Trophy will be presented, as will the Offensive and Defensive MVP awards ... an 11-person all-Boilermaker Challenge Cup team also will be announced ... the team championship will again be determined by a points system, with three points awarded for a win and one for a tie ... if necessary, penalty kicks will be used as a standings tiebreaker following overtime matches.

OH SAY CAN UC: Meridy Glenn's Cincinnati Bearcats and the Boilermakers meet for the first time Saturday at 2 p.m. ... Glenn is in her 22nd season as UC's head coach, and sports an overall record of 235-140-28 ... the Bearcats are looking to rebound from a rough 2003 season, which saw them place 11th in Conference USA ... UC, which won conference titles in 2001 and 2002, hope to return to form in 2004 with Lisa Stephens and Amy Mink leading the way ... Mink scored four goals and three assists in 2002, but was sidelined by an injury through 2003 ... the Bearcats recently returned from a week-long trip to Europe, where they played several clubs from Scotland and Belgium and Germany.
SHERIFF LOBOS: Purdue meets Kit Vela's New Mexico Lobos for the first time Sunday at 4 p.m. ... Vela, now in her fifth season at UNM, posts an overall win-loss record of 19-32-6 ... the Lobos are coming off a tough 2003 season, which saw them finish with a 3-12-4 record ... eight of those matches were decided in overtime ... the team returns 22 letterwinners, including last year's leading scorer Kristine Sweat and durable goalkeeper Kristen Winters.
FIT TO BE TIED: Purdue and DePaul tied at 2-2 during Saturday's exhibition at the IPFW Soccer Showcase ... amazingly, all four goals were scored within a span of 3:16 ... Purdue goals were scored by freshmen Jill Sarbaugh and Shauna Stapleton ... DePaul received both its points from Lauren Spacht ... after Stapleton put Purdue ahead 2-1 in the 56th minute, it took Spacht and the Blue Demons a mere 39 seconds to tie the match a second time ... the elapsed time between both Purdue scores was 2:37, while DePaul scored their two goals within 1:48 ... the Purdue match record for shortest span between goals is 1:03, which was set at Valparaiso on Sept. 7, 2000 by Jessica Baumhoff and Annette Kent ... the Purdue match record for shortest span between goals allowed is 25 seconds, which was accomplished by Nebraska on Sept. 10, 2000 ... Lauren Mason played all 90-minutes of the exhibition and made two saves ... the Boilermakers outshot their regional rivals 12-9, putting eight of those shots on goal.
CATCHING KENT: Senior Lauren Sesselmann is on pace to replace Annette Kent (2000-2003) in several offensive categories this season ... the Green Bay, Wis., native is six goals, two assists and 14 points behind Kent, who completed her career with 31 goals, 19 assists and 81 points ... if Sesselmann and her team co-captain Meghan Dybvig are able to play 20 matches this year, they will share the record for most soccer matches played as a Boilermaker ... Kent and Mary Masck (2000-2003) currently hold the record at 83 matches played.
RADIO, RADIO: Steve Hall and Andrew Staley will handle the broadcast for Purdue's home soccer matches ... Hall is in his third season calling the play-by-play action ... Staley is in his first season as color analyst, after spending the past three seasons serving as the Varsity Soccer Complex's public address announcer ... DOWN THE ROAD: Next week Purdue visits No. 20 West Virginia (Sept. 1) and No. 26 Nebraska (Sept. 5), which could be its most challenging trip of the season ... the Boilermakers play six nationally ranked teams this season, five of them on the road.
