WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Freshman Makaela Nellams recorded a hat trick, scoring each of her three goals in the second period and carrying the Yellow Team to a 5-4 victory in Purdue soccer's second scrimmage of the preseason Sunday evening at the Varsity Soccer Complex.

Due to injuries and lingering ailments, Sunday's scrimmage featured 9-v-9 action on a 60-by-96 yard field. The teams played three 22-minute periods. The Boilermakers open their new season Friday at 7 p.m. against Toledo.

Hadley Stuart scored twice for the Red Team, opening the scoring with a goal in the first minute on a nice rising blast into the top 90 on the left side of the net. Alex Hairston (Red), Taylor Niewoit (Yellow) and Jordan Pawlik (Red) also registered goals on the night.

The Yellow Team led 5-2 at the end of the second period. The Red Team made a late push thanks to goals from Pawlik and Stuart but did not have enough time to record an equalizer.

The game was tied 1-1 entering the second period after an own goal caromed into off Red Team defender Jordan Frick.

Nellams went to work in the second period, scoring each of her goals in consecutive fashion. Her first score came on a shot from 10 yards out in the center of the field, firing it inside the right post. A wild sequence that featured a deflection off the crossbar and a team save on a follow up shot by Kate Fowee led to Nellams' second goal, scoring off the rebound. The freshman's third score came on a rise blast into the top half of the net after a spin and shoot move from the heart of the 18-yard box.

Hairston finally responded for the Red Team with a goal on a ground shot inside the left post. But Niewoit answered not long after with a goal in the final moments of the second period. An impressive display of dribbling and ball control allowed the sophomore to work free in the middle of the 18-yard box for the Yellow Team's final goal.

In the third period, Pawlik scored from the right flank with a rising blast after a left-to-right cross. Stuart's second goal of the night came on a point blank tap in after Yana Lyon had a made diving save on a shot by Nicole Hively from the left flank.

Hively also hit the left post in a 1-v-1 chance against Lyon in the second period. For the Yellow Team, Fowee hit the left post in the third period and Shae Desmond fired a shot off the crossbar. Nellams nearly had a fourth goal after Desmond's shot off the crossbar caromed to her, but the freshman's header sailed high. Pawlik also missed high early in the game on a quality one-touch chance from the right flank following a left-to-right cross.

Red Team goalkeeper Samantha Rosa's top save of the night came in the second period, diving to her right to snare a shot by Niewoit.
