WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Alex Hairston, Hadley Stuart & Taylor Niewoit each scored a second-half goal for the Yellow Team to help their squad overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit and win Purdue soccer's first organized team scrimmage, 3-1, Tuesday evening.

The teams played about 65 minutes of action Tuesday with the goal of extending Sunday's second team scrimmage a bit longer. The Red Team held a 1-0 lead at the half thanks to a goal from assistant coach Erin Otagaki-VanPaemel. The coach staff as well as program alumni Carianne Betts, Kristin Hetzel and Lauren Varnau participated due to injuries and general soreness among the active players.

The Yellow Team dominated possession and the flow of play for much of the second half. Hairston accounted for the equalizer and Stuart scored the go-ahead goal. Both goals came from the right flank, scoring on right to left diagonal shots from about 15 yards out inside the left post.

Niewoit's goal came following an impressive individual effort that saw the sophomore dribble around and through multiple opponents to create a shot from the left flank. She scored with a blast inside the left post to cap the scoring on the day.

The Red Team's best scoring chance of the second half came early on. Goalkeeper Samantha Rosa made a nice slap save with her arms extended to her left, deflecting Kate Fowee's shot out of bounds and winning the battle in a semi-breakaway opportunity for Fowee.

Shae Desmond also played a nice right to left cross through the mouth of the six-yard box in the second half for the Red Team, but it did not connect with a teammate.

Not long before Hairston tied the game, Red Team goalkeeper Yana Lyon made a nice point blank save on Hairston in the heart of the 18-yard box. Lyon also made two nice saves in the first half.

Otagaki-VanPaemel took advantage of a misplay by Rosa to score midway through the first half for the Red Team. She was able to shoot the ball into a wide open net after gaining possession near the top of the 18-yard box.

Sunday's scrimmage is set for 7 p.m. The season opener is Friday, Aug. 17 against Toledo.
