Final Stats

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - It was a successful trip to the west coast for the Boilermaker soccer team, as No. 25 Purdue defeated Oregon 3-1. With only five shots on goal, Purdue took advantage of almost every opportunity that presented itself.

Junior Loredana Riverso led the way with two goals and freshman Alexis Tryba notched one. The back line was also stellar for Purdue, thwarting away the Oregon attack all game long.

"Our back line and our goalkeeper handled everything they threw at us," coach Rob Klatte said. "We had a bunch of clearances and essential punches out of the zone. If you don't give up goals and you can score, you're going to win games."

The Ducks thought they struck first in the 10th minute, but an offside call overruled their near-goal. The Boilermakers capitalized on the Oregon miscue, scoring in the 28th minute. Freshman Kellie Phillips hit Loredana Riverso streaking down the middle of the field on a nice through pass. Riverso picked up her second goal of the season as she beat the Oregon goalkeeper one-on-one.

Purdue almost struck again in the 37th minute when freshman Britney Scott took a shot from 25 yards out and hit the crossbar. Sophomore Katie Seeger and senior Felicia Schroeder made a series of nice passes to feed the ball to Scott, who recorded her first career shot.

The Boilermakers made it 2-0 when Alexis Tryba found the back of the net off an assist from sophomore Jessica Stellhorn. Stellhorn took a free kick from 35 yards out and Tryba was able to rise above the Oregon defense to head the ball into the back left corner of the net.

The Ducks got back on the offensive for the last five minutes of the first half and carried it over into the first ten minutes of the second, but still could not break through as the Purdue defense held strong.

Purdue put the icing on the cake in the 85th minute, as Riverso scored her second goal of the match on a long pass from freshman Lauren Montenegro. With the Oregon defense sucked up on the Boilermakers' side of the field, Montenegro cleared the ball out and Riverso slipped behind for another one-on-one situation. She broke away and easily punched the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

Oregon got on the board in the 88th minute, as Teresa Bowens took an assist from Kirstie Kuhns. It was not enough, however, as Purdue went on to the 3-1 win.

The Ducks finished with 16 shots and nine corner kicks, but could not do much damage with only four shots on goal. Purdue had only nine shots and one corner, but made the most of their five shots on goal. That ended up being the difference maker.
