WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Former Purdue women's golf stars Laura Gonzalez-Escallon and Paula Reto were named two players to watch at the second stage of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Qualifying School by Golfweek.com on Tuesday. The pair, along with 193 other LPGA hopefuls, started play yesterday at the Panther and Bobcat courses at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla.
At week's end, the top-80 finishers at the second stage of qualifying school will advance to the Stage III LPGA Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., scheduled for December 4-8. After the first day of competition, Reto is tied for 51st with a +1 score of 73 on the Bobcat course, while Gonzalez-Escallon shot a 74 (+2) on the Panther course and is tied for 76th.
The pair look to join a pair of former teammates on the LPGA Tour, following 2011 graduates Numa Gulyanamitta and Maude-Aimee LeBlanc, who played their rookie seasons in 2012 after qualifying for the tour on their first attempts.
Reto and Gonzalez-Escallon helped the Boilermakers to their 2010 NCAA Championship, a second-place national finish in 2011 and a third-place effort in 2013. Gonzalez-Escallon was a two-time Second Team All-America pick, finishing third at the NCAA Championships in 2011 and 2012, while Reto was tabbed First Team All-America in 2013 after taking third place.
