WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's golf team begins the 2012-2013 season this weekend with a 54-hole tournament Sept. 15 and 16. The Boilermakers are one of 16 teams travelling to East Lansing, Mich., for the Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State.

The two-day tournament will take place Saturday and Sunday with two rounds played on the first day and 18 holes on the second at MSU's Forest Akers West Golf Course, a par-72, 6,236-yard venue.

Of the 16 teams competing, Purdue faces four Big Ten rivals with Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and host Michigan State in the field. The Boilermakers are ranked 22nd in the Golf World/NGCA Preseason Coaches' Poll and are the only Big Ten team in the top 25. Purdue is ranked No. 12 in the preseason Golfweek poll.

The remaining teams in the field are Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Ferris State, Kent State, Louisiana-Monroe, Miami (Fla.), Notre Dame, Oakland, Texas State, Toledo and Western Michigan.

The Boilermakers concluded last season finishing ninth in the 2012 NCAA Championships. Of the five golfers who competed in last year's NCAA Championships, four return this year, plus head coach Devon Brouse has added a talented freshman class, that includes Margaux Vanmol and Brooke Beegle.

Leading the team are seniors Laura Gonzalez-Escallon, Paula Reto and Kishi Sinha. Gonzalez-Escallon has received much attention due to an outstanding junior campaign. The La Hulpe, Belgium, native was named Big Ten Player of the Year and received second team All-America honors by both the NGCA and Golfweek. She is coming into the 2012-2013 season ranked ninth in Golf World's Top 50 College Players to Watch List. Reto is also ranked among the top fifty golfers. Reto earned a quarterfinal finish at the 2102 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship this summer. Sinha, sophomore Aurora Kan and Vanmol are expected to fill out the five-player lineup. Beegle is scheduled to compete as an individual.

Play begins with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Saturday followed by an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for the final round Sunday. Live scoring for the tournament will be available at golfstatresults.com and daily recaps and results will be posted at purduesports.com.
