WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's golf team received recognition in the Golf World/NGCA Division I College Women's Preseason Coaches' Poll on Wednesday, earning the No. 13 spot in the nation heading into the 2013-14 season. It marks the fourth consecutive season the Boilermakers have earned a spot in the preseason rankings, up nine slots from last year's poll.
The Boilermakers will look to replace All-Americans Laura Gonzalez-Escallon and Paula Reto, and head into the season without a returning national honoree for the first time in 10 seasons. Rising junior Aurora Kan looks to be up to the challenge after finishing 15th at the 2013 NCAA Championships, including a final round of 73 at University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. She also advanced to the third round of the 2013 USGA Women's Amateur Championship, after tying for 16th in the prelims with a two-day score of 144. Other names to watch for the Boilermakers will be Johanna Tillstrom and Vinh-Hoa Ngo.
Southern California is the preseason No. 1 team in the country, earning 695 votes and 26-of-29 first-place ballots, while last year's top-ranked team, Alabama, opens the year at No. 2. Duke, UCLA and Arizona State round out the top-five, with the Bruins and Sun Devils both earning No. 1 votes.
