Women's Golf Tied for Fourth at Big Ten Championships After Second Round

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - The No. 33 Purdue women's golf team mounted a comeback in the second round of the 2012 Big Ten Championships in French Lick, Ind., to improve by four spots after finishing the first round in eighth place. The Boilermakers shot a 294 on Saturday to move into a tie for fourth place with Illinois with one round to go.

Junior Laura Gonzalez-Escallon provided a boost to the Boilermakers and is sitting in a tie for sixth place, totaling three-over par 147. She shot a 69, which is a tournament low so far. Freshman Vicky Scherer shot a 73, putting her five over par and tied for 12th. Junior Paula Reto shot a 75 and is tied for 18th.

The course played easier compared to the first day. The average score per round in the second round was 76.96, three strokes fewer than the 79.76 average from the first day.

Junior Kishi Sinha rounded out the Purdue top four with her 77 and is 13-over par for the event. Freshman Aurora Kan shot a 78, tying for 56th place, while freshman Kendall Dusenberry fired an 84 to tie for 69th.

Purdue is only 14 strokes behind the leader, No. 23 Michigan State. The Boilermakers shot 604 through two rounds. Michigan State's Lindsey Solberg is leading the pack, shooting one-under par. No. 19 Ohio State's Rachel Rohanna and MIchigan State's Caroline Powers are tied for second with one-over par through 18-holes.

The Boilermakers will be paired with Northwestern and Illinois on the last day of play. The first Purdue group will tee off beginning at 8 a.m. ET from hole No. 1 on Sunday.

Purdue has won five Big Ten Championship team titles and the last four Big Ten individual medals. The Boilermakers have finished either first or second in each of the last five championships.
