GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Purdue women's golf team is in second place with 18 holes remaining at the 2006 SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
Host-school Florida leads the event after a first-round total of 583 (+23). The Gators fired a 289 in the morning and a 294 on Saturday afternoon. The Boilermakers totaled 593 (+33) after rounds of 289 and 304.
Alabama is in third place with a total of 597. Michigan (598) and Michigan State (599) round out the top five.
Florida's Mallory Blackwelder is the individual leader. She is three-over par after 36 holes.
The fourth-ranked Boilermakers were led by freshman Maria Hernandez and junior Myrte Eikenaar. The duo had totals 147 on Saturday. They both fired a 72 in the morning and a 75 in the afternoon. They are tied for ninth place overall.
Freshman Christel Boeljon had the low round of the day for Purdue. She fired an even-par 70 over the first 18 holes. Boeljon followed it up with a 78 in the afternoon. She is tied for 12th place overall.
The Boilermakers captured four tournament titles during the fall season. They placed second behind Florida at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, the first event of the spring season.
The Lady Gator is being held on the 5,927-yard, par-70 University Golf Course.
Purdue is the top-ranked squad in the 14-team field. Florida is No. 18 in the Golfweek Poll. The Boilermakers placed fifth in the 2005 Lady Gator Invitational.
