TUSCON, Ariz. - The 20th-ranked Purdue women’s golf team sits in seventh place after 36 holes at the Wildcat Invitational, shooting 12-over par, 294-294=588, at Arizona’s Sewailo Golf Club on Monday. Junior Melati Putri and senior Marta Martin had the best individual days for the Boilermakers, shooting two-over par and sitting tied for 27th overall.
Putri dropped three birdies on the front-nine during the opening 18, shaving strokes on No. 4, No. 7 and No. 9, and had 12 straight holes without a bogey. She opened the second round strong, making birdie on the second and third holes, before giving strokes back on No. 6 and No. 7. Putri played the back-nine two-over to finish the day and own the Boilermakers’ top spot on the individual leaderboard.
Martin shot matching rounds of one-over 73, making two birdies over the first 18 holes and dropping four in the second round of play. She took advantage of No. 8 in both rounds, and made eight straight pars to close out the first round.
Freshman Inez Wanamarta sits one stroke behind Putri and Martin at three-over par, 147. Wanamarta posted a score of two-over 74 in the opening round with two birdies and sank three birdies on her way to a mark of one-over par in the second 18.
Junior Covadonga SanJuan and sophomore Micaela Farah split the final team scores in the two rounds on the day as SanJuan shot three-over 75 on the strength of three birdies in the first round, while Farah shot two-over par in the second round with one birdie.
Top-ranked UCLA has a hold on the team lead at 14-under par, led by a stellar day of 11-under par from Lilia Vu. Vu shot eight-under 64 in the opening round on her way to leading the field.
The final round of play starts Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. ET as the Boilermakers will be paired with UNLV, Augusta and Denver for the final 18 holes.
