Boiler Golfers Invited to Play in NCAA East Regional
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's golf team has been selected to compete in the 1997 NCAA Women's Golf East Regional, hosted by Illinois State on May 8-10. A total of 19 teams and seven individuals were selected to play in the three-round tournament. Only two NCAA Women's Golf Regionals are held, one in the East and one in the West. Qualifiers from these two regionals will compete in the NCAA Championships to be hosted by Ohio State.
The Boilers will have their hands full in Normal. They will be competing against 17 of the top 50 teams in the Rolex/CGF rankings. The highest ranked teams are Tennessee (No. 4), Duke (No. 5) and Louisiana State (No. 6). Duke's Jenny Chuasiriporn, ranked third in the nation, is the highest ranked in the field. Purdue and Miami (Fla.) are the only two teams that are not ranked. Ohio State and Indiana are the other Big Ten representatives.
The Boilers will compete in the Big Ten Championship tournament in East Lansing on May 2-4 before competing in the regional. Purdue has a chance of finishing in the top three, which would match its highest finish (1983). The Boilers placed fourth at last year's conference championship.
