Raised in Bloomington, Ind., Alex Guyton has come to play with the "good guys" in West Lafayette. Her friends and family at home enjoy heckling Guyton about her decision, but ultimately, they're proud of her.

"They understand and respect why I came to Purdue," said Guyton. "I'm here to do a job and they support me."

Even her grandfather, a die-hard IU fan, now frequently sports a Purdue hat and jacket in support of Guyton. In fact, Guyton's grandfather always told her to follow her heart and to do what is best for her in the long run. Throughout her life, he has taught her many great lessons about being a quality woman and basketball player.

Guyton's pick-up coach, Melvin Boatner, also played an influential role in her basketball career. Guyton started working out with Boatner casually, just for some extra time on the court. He wound up having a real impact on her.

"He has always been there to help me when I'm down and to push me through and pick me up," said Guyton. "He is a great role model and has been like a father to me."

The freshman forward is pleased with her decision to come to Purdue and she appreciates most the rich Boilermaker traditions and the amazing fan support. Her personal goal this season is to be a contributor and to help the team however she can.

Guyton has been doing just that. She has played in every game in the season and has adjusted well to playing with a new team. Guyton noticed that the college game is faster and the players are stronger than in high school. Her biggest challenge has been figuring out when and where to use her strengths.

Guyton finished high school averaging 14.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. She wrapped up her high school career with 1,055 points and 737 rebounds. Her outstanding play throughout her high school career earned her a spot on the 2008 Indiana All-Star Team, where she played alongside current Boilermaker teammate, Brittany Rayburn.

Through eight games at Purdue, Guyton is averaging six minutes a contest. She is averaging 2.5 points, 1.3 rebounds and is shooting 75.0 percent from the field on 9 of 12 made field goals.
