West Lafayette, Ind. - Purdue women’s basketball’s Dominique Oden was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Tuesday after an outstanding three-game stretch at the 2016 Triple Crown Sports Cancun Challenge. The Boilermaker rookie averaged 15.3 points, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game, shooting 68 percent from the floor as the team went 2-1 and were the runners-up in the Mayan Division.

Oden scored often-and-early in all three games, but none more than the tournament opener against Wichita State. She hit 7-of-9 from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, on her way to a career-high 23 points. She’s the second Purdue freshman in as many seasons to surpass the 20-point scoring mark in a game, following sophomore teammate Dominique McBryde. Oden followed up 12 points against Northeastern and 11 vs. No. 11 Stanford in the championship game, hitting 5-of-8 from the floor in both contests.

Through seven games of her young career, Oden is the Boilermakers’ second-leading scorer at 11.9 points per game, shooting 54.2 percent from the field. She became the first freshman to lead Purdue in scoring in her first career game since Courtney Moses in 2010, and is the first Boilermaker rookie to score in double figures in her first two career games since Katie Gearlds in 2003.

She scored 2,000 career points at the Marist School in Atlanta, Ga., the same high school as Purdue honorable mention All-American Drey Mingo.

Oden and the Boilermakers return to action tomorrow, Wednesday, heading to Pittsburgh for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, and the game will air live on ESPN3.
