The Connecticut Huskies
After a Thanksgiving trip to Italy in which they played two exhibition games, the Huskies were back on home soil and home court with an 84-51 win over Boston University on Nov. 28. Connecticut is 3-0 and head coach Geno Auriemma is just eight wins from 600 career victories. The Huskies are led by junior guard Mel Thomas who is averaging 17.3 points and 3.0 assists per game. She's not alone as the remainder of the starting five, Charde Houston (14.0), Tina Charles (11.7) , Kalana Greene (10.3) and Renee Montgomery (10.0) are all averaging double-figure points. Freshman center Tina Charles is also averaging a team-high 11.7 rebounds per game.
The last time these two teams met was April 1, 2003 in the finals of the NCAA East Regional in Dayton, Ohio. Connecticut won 73-64, to advance to the Final Four and eventually the national championship. The only other time Purdue and Connecticut have met, the Boilermakers prevailed 89-87 in overtime, Dec. 1, 1990 in the Dial Classic tournament hosted by Duke.
And The Award Goes To...
Senior Katie Gearlds continues to rack up the awards this season. Her most recent recognition is Big Ten Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 20, the first of her career. Gearlds was also recently named Sports Illustrated's first team All-
American. On Nov. 19 she was awarded WNIT tournament MVP honors. Earlier in the season Gearlds was unanimously selected to the Preseason All-Big Ten team and named to the Wade Trophy watch list.
We're No. 1
As of Nov. 27, Purdue at 6-0 is ranked No. 1 in the Jeff Sagarin/CBN Women's College Basketball Ratings, also known as the RPI. In second place is Tennessee followed by Maryland, Baylor and North Carolina. Also in the top 10 is Ohio State at No. 6. The Big Ten is rated as the third strongest conference behind the Big 12 and the SEC. Purdue's strength of schedule is rated as 16th.
A Fine Start
Head coach Sharon Versyp at 6-0 is off to the best start in school history for a first year head coach. The previous best was held by Marsha Reall (1986) and Kristy Curry (1999) who both started 4-0.
