The Purdue women's basketball team is ranked No. 1 in the nation for the first time in school history in this weeks Associated Press poll.

The Boilermakers received 18 first-place votes and 987 points to edge Connecticut (17 first-place votes) by a single point.

Purdue's previous highest AP ranking was No. 2 in the 1994-95 preseason poll.

The last Purdue team to be ranked No. 1 was the football squad during the 1968 season (the weeks of Sept. 16, Sept. 23, Sept. 30 and Oct. 6).

"To be quite honest with you I'm not sure how to react," Purdue coach Carolyn Peck said. "Obviously it's a tremendous honor for this program to be ranked No. 1, but with it comes a tremendous challenge to remain focused on our ultimate team goals. The recognition is great, but it really doesnt matter where you're ranked in November. What matters is March."
