Nov. 8, 2000

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Katie Douglas has been named to the Associated Press preseason All-America women's basketball team. A senior guard/forward for the Boilermakers, Douglas is joined on the team by Tennessee's Tamika Catchings, Connecticut's Svetlana Abrosimova and Shea Ralph, and Georgia's Kelly Miller.

"It's truly a great honor to be thought of as one of the top five players in the nation, but I still feel I have a lot to prove," Douglas said. "Although the recognition is nice, a greater accomplishment would be to lead Purdue to success. That's the one I'm after."

Douglas edged out Notre Dame's senior center Ruth Riley for admission onto the list, receiving 23 votes. Catchings led all players with 40 votes, followed by Abrosimova (29), Miller (29) and Ralph (25). Douglas is the only player of the five that was not named a first team AP All-American at the conclusion of the 1999-2000 season. She was a second-team selection after averaging 20.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.4 steals per game.

This is one of many preseason honors for Douglas, a 1999-2000 Kodak All-American. She was named the Big Ten's Preseason Player of the Year, as well as a first team preseason All-American by Lindy's, Street & Smith's and Sports Illustrated for Women.

The Boilermakers open their season this Saturday, Nov. 11, when they host Eastern Michigan in the first round of the 2000 Preseason WNIT. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
