INDIANAPOLIS - Jessica Lipsett was recognized as the Athletic Trainer of the Year for the college/university division at the Indiana Athletic Trainers Association Awards Banquet in Indianapolis on Sunday.
Lipsett has been at Purdue since 2003, with the primary responsibility of serving as the athletic trainer for the Boilermaker women's basketball team. She also works with the football program and track and field, teaches classes and works as a physical therapist in the Purdue University Health Services Center.
A native of Port Byron, Ill., Lipsett received her bachelor's degree from Illinois in 2000, then earned a master's and a doctorate in physical therapy from Northwestern in 2002. While working to complete her graduate degrees, Lipsett received clinical experience at Purdue. Lipsett returned to West Lafayette from the Methodist Sports Medicine Clinic in Indianapolis, where she specialized in knee rehabilitation.
It is Lipsett's commitment to her responsibilities, including the concern for her student-athletes that led to Lipsett discovering Drey Mingo last November at her apartment, seriously ill with what was later diagnosed as bacterial meningitis. Lipsett's actions are credited with saving Mingo's life.
Lipsett was presented her award by colleague and former IATA Athletic Trainer of the Year, Craig Voll. Several representatives from Purdue were on hand at the awards luncheon, including head coach Sharon Versyp and her staff.
