NCAA Woman Of The Year Announcement Nears

Oct. 21, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Stephanie White-McCarty, an All-America basketball player that led the Boilermakers to the 1999 NCAA national championship, is one of 10 finalists for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. The winner will be announced at an awards dinner on Oct. 24 in Indianapolis.

The 1999 Wade Trophy and Honda Award winner, White-McCarty averaged 20.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game for Purdue in her senior season. A 5-11 guard/forward, she guided the Boilermakers to an undefeated Big Ten regular season, their second consecutive conference tournament crown and their first ever national title while posting a 34-1 overall record. White-McCarty, the 1995 Indiana Miss Basketball out of Seeger Memorial High School in West Lebanon, Ind., earned Big Ten Player of the Year, Purdue Female Athlete of the Year and Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year honors in 1999. She was named first team All-American by Associated Press, Kodak and Sports Illustrated.

A communication major, White-McCarty also excelled in the classroom. Elected to Phi Beta Kappa, she was named the GTE Academic All-American of the Year as a senior and was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. In addition to hitting the books, White-McCarty found time to speak at local schools, work at basketball camps, coach her own AAUbasketball team, and volunteer with C.H.A.P.S., and D.A.R.E.

White-McCarty, who graduated from Purdue in May, immediately began a professional basketball career with the Charlotte Hornets of the WNBA. She averaged 5.3 points and 1.6 rebounds in 30 games for the Eastern Conference runners-up.

The NCAA Woman of the Year Award, now in its ninth year, aims to recognize outstanding achievements in athletics, academics and community leadership. Over 300 student-athletes were nominated, with 50 state winners and the 10 finalists chosen by a committee of athletic administrators from NCAA member colleges and universities. The winner is chosen by the Committee on Women’s Athletics, chaired by Alfreeda Goff of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.

The nine athletes in competition with White-McCarty follow: Erin Baxter, Florida (soccer), Charlotte Davis Quesada, Virginia (crew), Jamila Demby, UC Davis (track and field), Suzanne Eastman, Dartmouth (soccer), Jaimee Heffner, Washington and Jefferson (track and field), Theresa Marie Lang, North Dakota State (basketball), Jayna Mathieu, St. Olaf (track and cross country), Emily Stauffer, Harvard (soccer), Trina Steines, Wartburg (track and cross country).
