Sept. 12, 2012
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - For the fourth-straight year, Purdue head women's basketball coach Sharon Versyp is serving as the honorary chair for the Greater Lafayette Hunger Hike.
The Hunger Hike is an annual event that helps meet the needs of hungry families in the Lafayette community as well as overseas, and this year the event is being held Sunday, Sept. 16.
Once again, the women's basketball team will participate in the Hike. The Boilermakers will be on hand during the registration period to interact with those participating and to help start the walk. In the previous years, other Purdue athletic teams, as well as student groups on campus have participated.
This year's Hunger Hike will be held Sunday, with registration from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. ET at Riehle Plaza in Lafayette. The two-mile hike and a 5K run are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Door prizes and entertainment will be provided before and after the hike, while awards will be distributed at approximately 3 p.m.
Interested parties can check out the Hunger Hike website for more information or to register a team. Brochures are available at Lafayette Urban Ministry, Food Finders Food Bank and St. Thomas Aquinas.
The Hunger Hike is the Greater Lafayette community's biggest effort to raise funds for hunger programs here and abroad. Lafayette Urban Ministry, Food Finders Food Bank and the St. Tom's Haiti Ministry all use revenue from the Hunger Hike to make a difference for hungry children and families.
Participants have two options, a two mile walk on the Wabash Heritage Trail or a 5K run which has a $10 registration fee. For those unable to participate, donations can be made online at the link above.
