WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue head coach Sharon Versyp has been named the honorary chair for the 2009 Greater Lafayette Hunger Hike and she has designated the Hunger Hike as a community service project for the Purdue women's basketball team.

This year's Hunger Hike will be held Sunday, September 20, with registration from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. ET at Riehle Plaza in Lafayette. Interested parties can check out hungerhike.org for more information or to register a team. Brochures are available at Lafayette Urban Ministry, Food Finders Food Bank and St. Thomas Aquinas.

"It is important for the team to give back to the community and nothing is more basic than making sure people have enough to eat," Versyp said.

The Hunger Hike, presented by Bison Financial Group, is the Greater Lafayette community's biggest effort to raise funds for hunger programs here and abroad. Lafayette Urban Ministry, Food Finders Food Bank and the St. Tom's Haiti Ministry all use revenue from the Hunger Hike to make a difference for hungry children and families. This year in addition to the two mile hike on the Wabash Heritage Trail, there is a new option. To encourage greater participation in the event, the Hunger Hike will offer a 5K route that is perfect for runners. This year's goal is 1,000 participants in the event.

"With the need so great this year, we are aiming to increase the community's participation," Patti O'Callaghan, director of social justice at Lafayette Urban Ministry said. "Everyone can do their part by walking - or running - and raising at least $50 per participant for the Hunger Hike."
