WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue women’s basketball 2017 graduate Ashley Morrissette became the newest Boilermaker to join the professional ranks Monday, signing a contract to play in Romania for the 2017-18 season. The 2017 First Team All-Big Ten pick will play for Olimpia Braşov in Liga Națională, and is the second Boilermaker in as many seasons to join their ranks.
Morrissette is the 16th player under Purdue head coach Sharon Versyp to play professionally overseas, and follows closely in the footsteps of former teammate KK Houser, who played for Olimpia Braşov in 2016-17. Morrissette capped off an amazing Boilermaker career in 2016-17, leading her team to the Big Ten Tournament finals and the 26th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
“I’m thrilled for Ashley to have earned this opportunity and give herself a chance to keep playing our game,” said Versyp. “I’m not sure I’ve ever had a player grow more over her four years, and I couldn’t be more excited for her to continue growing in Europe.”
The Twinsburg, Ohio native averaged team-best marks of 16.8 points, 4.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game in her senior season, graduating as the No. 16 scorer all-time at Purdue. She also finished No. 3 all-time with 194 career 3-pointers and No. 7 all-time at the free throw line, making 80.1 percent. Her senior year boasted some of the top single-season marks at Purdue as well, posting the No. 3 assist total (172), No. 4 3-point mark (69) and No. 10 scoring tally (603).
Morrissette departs for Europe next week (Aug. 29) and the Liga Națională season is scheduled to start in early October.
