Aug. 15, 2002

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's basketball schedule for the 2002-03 season is almost complete, with one opponent still to be determined.

Head coach Kristy Curry believes the 28-game regular season slate will provide a staunch challenge for the Boilermakers.

"I'm very happy with our schedule this year," Curry says. "We're going to be a young team, so we wanted to schedule games that would test us and help us learn at the same time. We're looking forward to getting started."

The two-time defending Big Ten champion Boilermakers will begin their season on Nov. 22 at Wisconsin-Milwaukee. They will host Pacific in their home opener on Nov. 24.

For the first time since the 1994-95 season, the women's basketball team will host a tournament in Mackey Arena. On. Nov. 28 and 29, the Boilermakers will welcome Holy Cross, Texas Christian and a team to be determined for the WBCA/Basketball Travelers Classic. Once the fourth team is added, the pairings will be announced.

Purdue then will travel to Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg on Dec. 1. A trip to Tempe, Ariz., for the Hoops for the Cure game against Vanderbilt follows on Dec. 7.

On Dec. 14, the Boilermakers will play Indiana in the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. This meeting, which will be the first of the day in a doubleheader with the Purdue and Indiana men's teams, will be counted as a non-conference game.

The Boilermakers again will head west for a Dec. 17 showdown with UC Santa Barbara. They will return to West Lafayette to close out the year with games against Boston College on Dec. 21 and Western Michigan on Dec. 29.

The first opponent of the new year will be Tulane, which will come to Mackey Arena for a Jan. 2 meeting. Two days later on Jan. 4, Purdue will be in South Bend to play intrastate rival Notre Dame in a game televised by CBS.

Purdue's Big Ten season gets under way on Jan. 6, when it plays at Michigan State. After a trip to Wisconsin on Jan. 9, the Boilermakers will open their home conference season against Michigan on Jan. 12.

Purdue will play each team in the Big Ten twice, with the exception of Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Boilermakers will host the Hoosiers and Wolverines, but will travel to face the Golden Gophers and Badgers.

The Big Ten Tournament again will be played at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The tournament will be held from March 6 to March 10, with Saturday, March 8, as the day off between the quarterfinals and semifinals.

March Madness will begin on March 16, when the NCAA Tournament bracket is announced on Selection Sunday. In an announcement made by the NCAA earlier this summer, Purdue was named one of 16 pre-determined sites to host an NCAA Tournament sub-regional. Game dates for the Mackey Arena sub-regional already have been decided: first-round games will be played on Saturday, March 22; the second-round game will be played on Monday, March 24.
