Douglas Leads USA to Tournament Title

June 27, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Katie Douglas, a junior on the Purdue women's basketball team, led the USA Women's World University Games Team to a 56-52 win over Spain in Torrejon De Ardoz, Spain, tonight, helping the Americans capture the 1999 Spanish International Basketball Tournament title. The USA team, which also includes Purdue junior Camille Cooper, defeated Portugal and Mexico on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Douglas led her squad with 12 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the field (4-for-6 free throws), while snatching four steals. Her final steal proved crucial, as it came when Spain had an opportunity to tie the game with less than 20 seconds remaining. Douglas intercepted a pass and was immediately fouled, then converted on the first of two free throws to give the United States the four-point margin.

Douglas, a 6-1 guard/forward, paced the USA in scoring all three games, starting off with 12 in the 92-39 win against Portugal, and 14 in 18 minutes off the bench in a 96-44 decision against Mexico. She finished the three-game tournament with a 12.7 points per game scoring average, while totaling 11 rebounds, 10 steals and eight assists. She averaged 22.0 minutes per game

Cooper, a 6-4 center, averaged 5.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.

The Americans will next travel to Palma de Mallorca, Spain, to compete in the World University Games Tournament. Their first game will be July 5 against China.
