Purdue to Expand Beer, Wine Sales

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue Athletics will expand beer and wine sales at Ross-Ade Stadium and Mackey Arena beginning this fall.

Beer and wine will be available for purchase throughout both venues, with the exception of the concourse area immediately adjacent to the respective student sections.

Beer, wine and liquor have been available at Ross-Ade in premium seating sections and suites since 2003, while beer and wine have been sold on the South End Zone Patio since 2015. In Mackey, beer, wine and liquor have been available in club spaces since 2011.

“We had extensive discussions with campus police and safety and security, and what we learned is that our fans have responded very favorably to being able to purchase beer and wine on the South End Zone Patio,” Purdue vice president and athletics director Mike Bobinski said. “The atmosphere in the South End Zone is very positive, and there have been fewer alcohol-related incidents on gamedays since its inception. As a result, in an attempt to further enhance our gameday experience and provide an additional amenity for our fans, we believe the time is right to offer this expanded opportunity.

“At the same time, fan safety and enjoyment remain our top priorities, and we will closely monitor the expanded service to ensure that our objectives are being met."

Beer and wine have been sold at Alexander Field since 2014, Bittinger Stadium since 2015 and Folk Field since 2016.

Bobinski and his staff consulted other universities to gather feedback on best practices and were given authorization to proceed by the Purdue Board of Trustees and president Mitch Daniels.

Alcohol sales will cease at the end of the third quarter at football games, at the second half under 12-minute timeout at men’s basketball games and at the end of the third quarter at women’s basketball games.

The sales will be handled by licensed vendor Levy Restaurants, which will follow all state excise laws and enforce the following policies:

* Valid I.D. is required for purchase. A guest that appears to be 30 years of age or younger must produce a valid form of acceptable identification.
* There is a two alcoholic beverage limit, per person, per transaction.
* Alcohol service will be discontinued or denied at the discretion of management.
* All guests must be 21 years of age to purchase an alcoholic beverage.

In conjunction with the expanded beer and wine sales, Purdue Athletics will implement a no re-entry policy for Ross-Ade in 2017, bringing the stadium in line with the same practice currently in place at Mackey and adhering to best-practice recommendations received after an event operations/security review performed during the 2016 football season. There will be no pass-outs, and fans who choose to exit Ross-Ade will not be allowed to re-enter.
