May 10, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Katie Douglas and Camille Cooper, members of the 1999 NCAA national champion Purdue women's basketball team, have been invited to try out for the 1999 USA Basketball Women's World University Games team. The tryouts will be held May 19-24 in Colorado Springs, Colo. A total of 44 of the country's top players, including 11 members of previous USA Basketball squads, received invitations. The selections were made by the USA Basketball Women's Select Team Committee, chaired by Anne Donovan.

"This is a great honor for Katie and Camille and I know they will do a tremendous job at the tryouts," Purdue coach Kristy Curry said. "We're very proud of their accomplishments and wish them the best of luck as they represent Purdue University."

Douglas, who will be a junior next year, was voted a second team All-American by the Women's Basketball News Service after averaging 14.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game during the 1998-99 season. A 6-0 guard/forward, Douglas was named to the NCAA Women's Final Four and Big Ten all-tournament teams.

Cooper, a 6-4 center, averaged 9.7 points and 4.9 rebounds for Purdue last year. A junior-to-be, Cooper was named to the NCAA Midwest Regional All-Tournament Team and was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection.

Eleven different conferences and 33 schools will be represented at the trials, with the Big Ten, Big 12, Pacific 10 and Southeastern conferences boasting six apiece. In addition to Cooper and Douglas, Michigan's Stacey Thomas, Michigan State's Maxann Reese and Penn State's Helen Darling and Andrea Garner were invited.

Coaching duties will be handled by Penn State's Rene Portland, who will be assisted by Bonnie Henrickson from Virginia Tech and Britt King from Fresno State.

A 12-member squad will be selected following the trials May 24. That team will train June 14-23 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, then will participate in a four-team tournament in Logrono, Spain, from June 25-27. The women's World University Games basketball competition is slated to be played from July 5-11 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
