WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
Not only will this Sunday serve as senior day for the Boilermakers, but it also will be Purdue's Pink Zone for breast cancer awareness and the annual Barn Burner Trophy game. Purdue plays host to instate rival Indiana on Sunday at noon ET in Mackey Arena and the game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game. The women's basketball team will be sporting white Nike uniforms with pink trim, commemorative pink t-shirts as shooting shirts and pink shoes, all in an effort to help raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research. The student-athletes' jerseys will be part of a silent auction with proceeds going to the Central Indiana Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
This is the fifth season that Purdue has participated in the WBCA's breast cancer awareness event and multiple donation opportunities are available to help the Boilermakers raise funds for breast cancer research.
Donations will be accepted and the silent auction will be held on the concourse behind Section 105 of Mackey Arena. A donation can be made for either a specified amount or based on free throws made in the game by the Boilermakers. A silent auction will include two autographed basketballs with bids starting at $75 and the players' Pink Zone jerseys with minimum bids of $175. The silent auction will begin when the doors open at 11 a.m. and end at the start of the second half. Payment options are either by cash or checks payable to Purdue Research Foundation. No credit cards will be accepted.
Again this year, pink tennis balls will be available for purchase - one for $2 or three for $5 - with the opportunity to participate in a halftime ball toss on Keady Court for a $100 Follett's Bookstore gift card. Cancer survivors will be honored at halftime, and anyone wishing to participate in the survivor recognition is asked to meet at Section 115 with four minutes remaining in the first half.
All proceeds from the Purdue Pink Zone event will benefit the Central Indiana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a foundation dedicated to breast cancer research. Lafayette Cancer Care is the game sponsor and will have an information booth set up at the game.
The Women's Basketball Coaches' Association Pink Zone initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Overall, the WBCA Pink Zone has raised over $4.5 Million for cancer research. Purdue has raised approximately $32,000 in its four years participating in the event.
As for senior day, Purdue senior band members, male practice squad members, student athletics trainer, mangers and players will be honored in a ceremony to be held immediately after the end of the contest against the Hoosiers.
Game tickets can be purchased at the Purdue Athletics Ticket Office in Mackey Arena, by calling 1-800-49-SPORT or online at purduesports.com.
